To the Victor Go the Spoils

Winning is a great thing. To quote the late Yankee legend Billy Martin, "when you're winning, the cigars are smoother, the drinks are colder and the women are hotter." Yes, winning is awesome and it doesn't happen too often. Relish it when it happens, hold onto every split second of that feeling of utter greatness as it'll be a while until it comes again. All glory is fleeting and sparse. It's what makes it so horribly frustrating when victory is swept out from under your feet...but all the more tremendous when you finally come out on top.

I have had my fair share of victories in life, and a whole lot of losses. More losses than I can count to be quite honest. But it's the little wins here and there, those times I hit a round ball with a round bat and hit it squarely...if that makes sense. Or those times when I had a few inches at the top corner of the net and I was able to roof the puck over the goalie's shoulder and hit that unlikely spot. Oh, how nice that was. If only I could skate a little better, maybe there would have been a few more of those babies!

This is what we have to keep in mind, always. Life can be one crushing defeat after another, but once in a while...oh baby, that sweet smell of victory stings the nostrils. That moment when you defy the odds and logic and beat that stupid mother fucker who stacks his team with ringers, buys the most expensive bats and makes sure the umpires have a cooler of cold beers waiting for them after the game.

Yes, we have all faced these obstacles...if not on the field of play, perhaps at work. It's no different, as the game of life is played everywhere. And there is always some stupid asshole who cheats endlessly and wins almost all of the time. But it's those sweet, sweet moments when you defy the odds and defeat the powers that be. And yes, the cigars are smoother, the drinks are colder and hell yes, the women are hotter!

The greatest part of life is winning. If I could only figure out how to make that happen again!

I still haven't been able to top that martini! Damn was it cold and delicious! And the wife looked more amazing than usual that night!
